One litter at a time

Winterwood Amstaffs is a small, family-run program based in North Fort Worth — not a commercial kennel. We breed one dam at a time rather than running multiple litters in parallel, which means fewer puppies per year, but every litter is whelped and raised inside our home, underfoot, with real early handling instead of kennel time.

Testing before temperament, temperament before looks

Every dog we breed is OFA certified and cleared on the DM, NCL, and HUU genetic panels first — that's non-negotiable regardless of how promising a dog looks on paper. Beyond health testing, we breed for the Amstaff temperament the standard describes: confident, people-oriented, and stable, not reactive. Markings and color are the last thing we consider, not the first.

Early socialization

Puppies are raised around normal household noise — the dishwasher, the TV, kids if we have visitors, other dogs in the home — from the start, rather than in an isolated whelping area. The goal is a puppy that's already comfortable with everyday life by the time they go home with you.

Why this approach

It would be easy to run more litters and place more puppies faster. We've chosen not to, because the parts of this that matter most to us — health testing, real socialization, knowing every family personally — don't scale well past a certain size without cutting corners somewhere. We'd rather stay small and keep those standards intact.
